20 Fantasy Hockey Thoughts: Huge alternative for Samsonov with Maple Leafs

Read Time:25 Minute, 48 Second

Drafting Logan Thompson got here with a whole lot of danger.

Although Thompson was in an awesome spot heading into the season, he’d performed simply 20 profession video games and banking on a goalie with a small pattern dimension is a dangerous endeavour. Thompson, although, has rewarded fantasy GMs for his or her perception in him with a shutout, two wins and 54 saves on 57 pictures to date this season.

Add in the truth that the Vegas Golden Knights seem like a way more impressed staff than the one we noticed final yr, and Thompson seems to be constructing a case for the perfect goalie steal in fantasy for 2022-23.

Bruce Cassidy’s arrival has little question helped Thompson’s trigger. Cassidy’s Boston Bruins groups ranked within the high 5 in targets in opposition to in each full season he was behind the bench there, because of his sturdy defensive construction. Thompson is now benefiting from that and so are those who had religion in him throughout draft season.

1. Interesting to see the Boston Bruins give the primary begin to Linus Ullmark. Most individuals most likely took Jeremy Swayman larger in drafts, as Swayman is at present 89% rostered in Yahoo leagues, whereas Ullmark sits at 57%. The begins in internet are most likely going to be nearer to 50/50 between the 2 except somebody actually runs away with the job, so don’t hesitate to seize Ullmark for those who want goalie assist. The hole between the 2 isn’t that huge.

2. Sticking with the Bruins, David Krejci picked up a objective and two assists in his first sport again within the NHL. His type of play is the kind that ages very nicely and Boston’s high six nonetheless appears very potent, even with out Brad Marchand. It wouldn’t shock me if Krejci has one other 60-point season in him. He’s simply 24% rostered.

3. Tough information for Patrik Laine, as he’s set to overlook 3-4 weeks already with an damage. I’m undecided there’s a superb inside candidate on the Columbus Blue Jackets you’ll be able to decide as much as substitute him, as Justin Danforth received the primary crack at issues on the highest line. That experiment could not final lengthy. There are most likely higher choices from different groups in your waiver wire.

4. One choice to contemplate is Martin Necas. The Carolina Hurricanes ahead is off to a scorching begin with two targets and two assists and is simply 27% rostered. He was one of many largest disappointments in fantasy final yr, however with Laine sidelined, Necas might be a danger price taking.

5. Great information for those who’re rostering Andrei Kuzmenko. He held onto his energy play spot on the highest unit regardless of the return of Brock Boeser to the lineup. As lengthy as Kuzmenko is in that position and within the Vancouver Canucks high six, he’s price holding.

6. Sean Durzi was benched Thursday after a nasty giveaway resulted in Vegas’ game-winning objective on opening evening. Many are relying on Durzi as considerably of a sleeper and energy play specialist this yr, so hopefully this was only a one-game message and never a daily prevalence.

7. Not a perfect scenario for Matthew Tkachuk’s line deployment proper now. He’s beginning out with Sam Bennett and Rudolfs Balcers, and never enjoying a lot with Aleksander Barkov. Even although he’s off to a superb begin, how productive can Tkachuk be long-term in that situation? I discussed this summer season I believed final season was the right storm for Tkachuk and he wouldn’t get near 100 factors once more, but when he stays on this line all yr, I feel 80 would possibly even be a stretch.

8. More from Florida, as Spencer Knight received the beginning Saturday. This yr the timeshare in objective with Sergei Bobrovsky needs to be a lot nearer to a 50/50 cut up. Of all of the 1Bs this season, I feel Knight will find yourself having essentially the most worth.

9. Four factors for Matty Beniers already to provide him 13 in his first 13 NHL video games. Beniers has an awesome likelihood to win the Calder and is offered in additional than half of leagues. If you’re considering of including him, it’s a good suggestion to do it sooner slightly than later. The Seattle Kraken play 4 instances subsequent week, together with contests on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, the place there are just a few video games on the schedule. Having extra gamers skating on nights with out a whole lot of video games is usually a huge benefit in head-to-head leagues.

10. There aren’t many gamers you’d wish to roster from the Arizona Coyotes, however Shayne Gostisbehere is one. Even on a nasty staff, he’s nice for factors, power-play factors, and blocks. As lengthy as your league doesn’t have plus/minus, Gostibehere is a superb depth add to your roster.

11. Quite a lot of groups play 4 video games subsequent week, together with the San Jose Sharks. If you’re in search of a short-term add, Luke Kunin has caught my eye. He’s enjoying on the highest line with Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl, along with his ice time, each at 5-on-5 and on the facility play, approach up from his profession common. Kunin is at all times nice for hits, but when this continues and he retains placing up factors and pictures, he’ll have worth in multi-cat leagues.

12. I’ll admit I used to be a bit cautious about utilizing a excessive draft decide on Steven Stamkos after he posted a profession yr at age 32, however to date, he appears simply nice. Four targets and 16 pictures in three video games with no indicators of slowing down. Does Stamkos have one other 50-goal season in him if he can keep wholesome?

13. It’s nonetheless early, although it’s trying much less and fewer seemingly Juraj Slafkovsky goes to make an actual fantasy influence in 2022-23. He’s averaging lower than 11 minutes of ice an evening and has no factors with only a single shot. If you took an opportunity on him, don’t get pissed off. Gambling on younger gamers like it is a low-risk and high-reward technique. Even if he doesn’t pan out this season, attempting your luck with high-end prospects remains to be a superb draft philosophy.

14. Matt Murray suffered an damage at observe Saturday and he’s going to be out long run, so it goes with out saying to seize Ilya Samsonov if he’s out there. I ranked Samsonov larger than Murray this summer season for simply this purpose. It’s an unlucky scenario for Murray, however a predictable one. He’s actually struggled to remain wholesome in recent times and now Samsonov is in an awesome spot in the intervening time to construct off his two victories, behind a extremely sturdy Toronto Maple Leafs staff.

15. Jonathan Quick began the primary two video games of the season for the Los Angeles Kings, which is a bit regarding for those who’re rostering Cal Petersen. It’s early, but when that’s the plan for the rotation between the pipes in Los Angeles, enjoying as soon as per week isn’t going to provide Petersen a lot worth as a buy-low choice.

16. No targets but for Alex Ovechkin this season after three video games, however there’s no must panic. He’s nonetheless totaled 13 pictures and with that quantity, the targets will come. Ovechkin appears fairly motivated to chase down Wayne Gretzky’s objective report and he isn’t exhibiting any indicators of regression simply but.

17. If you wish to panic about one thing, or at the very least present some slight concern, how about Marc-Andre Fleury permitting 11 targets on 49 pictures to date this season. This is reminiscent to Fleury’s begin a yr in the past, although that was with the lowly Chicago Blackhawks and never the Minnesota Wild, who’ve excessive expectations this season. Still, I wouldn’t transfer on from Fleury proper now. Minnesota is a lot better than it’s proven to date and there’s nobody to problem Fleury for begins. It’s unlikely there’s a greater choice at present out there in your waiver wire.

18. Ottawa Senators head coach D.J. Smith made a curious transfer proper earlier than the season started, flipping centres Josh Norris and Tim Stutzle on the highest two strains. Stutzle had been skating with Alex DeBrincat and Claude Giroux all pre-season, however ended up beginning the season with Brady Tkachuk and Drake Batherson. Things haven’t been figuring out to date, because the Sens have managed simply three complete targets in a pair of losses. If I’m rostering Stutzle, I’d a lot slightly see him enjoying with Giroux and DeBrincat, as I feel that provides him the perfect likelihood to supply offense.

19. Those hoping that Lane Lambert could be a a lot completely different coach for the New York Islanders than Barry Trotz have to be excited to date. The Isles picked up their first win Saturday, posting a whopping seven targets. New York didn’t rating seven targets in a sport as soon as final season and although they don’t determine to hit that complete with regularity, it’s at the very least a glimmer of hope that gamers like Mathew Barzal and Oliver Wahlstrom might be in a greater place to supply offense.

20. There was some concern that Mason Marchment’s 71-point tempo a season in the past was a product of enjoying for the high-scoring Panthers. Marchment, although, is proving skeptics fallacious with three targets in his first two video games. Outside of the Dallas Stars’ high line, factors have been arduous to come back by final yr, however Marchment is squeezing what he can out of the second unit with Tyler Seguin. Marchment was one of many hardest gamers to foretell throughout draft season and proper now issues are figuring out swimmingly.
