Here are 10 takeaways from the Toronto Raptors‘ 139-109 win over the visiting Atlanta Hawks on Monday.
One: The Raptors bullied the Hawks right into a 30-point blowout. Even when the Hawks stored it shut initially, or when the lead was trimmed down to 2 possessions within the third quarter, the impression was at all times that the Raptors had the higher hand by way of their sheer measurement benefit. The Hawks have a really conventional beginning 5, with 5 gamers of various positions and skillsets, whereas the Raptors countered with an onslaught of interchangeable athletes with seven-foot-plus wingspans. Atlanta’s star backcourt of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray couldn’t discover any daylight in opposition to larger gamers exterior of a handful of defensive breakdowns, and the Raptors finally ran away with the win.
Two: It was a wrestle for the Hawks to even get a shot off, not to mention looking for area to shoot. The Raptors hounded the ball and jumped each passing lane, whereas nonetheless managing to rotate over for eight blocks on the basket. Even although Young is without doubt one of the quickest and craftiest gamers within the league, Scottie Barnes was in a position to meet him 35 toes out from his personal basket, include him on the drive, and change onto centres to neutralize the Hawks’ patented pick-and-rolls. Young was averaging 32 factors and 10 assists coming into the sport, however managed solely 13 factors on 3-of-13 capturing with 10 turnovers because the Raptors stored forcing him to play over and round size. Without their important offensive engine, the Hawks’ secondary gamers merely couldn’t generate sufficient offence to maintain tempo with the Raptors.
Three: Toronto outscored Atlanta 43-10 in fast-break factors. Most of that was a product of their defence, which compelled the Hawks into 13 live-ball turnovers, however the Raptors had been additionally in a position to run on each defensive rebound. The Raptors didn’t have a lot hassle within the halfcourt both, as Young was at all times a simple goal whereas Pascal Siakam was enjoying trick-or-treat with John Collins swiping at ghosts, however transition is at all times the place the Raptors excel. Siakam units the tone for pushing the break, as he’s nearly at all times catching runouts or feeding his teammates for straightforward appears to be like.

Four: Barnes was a lot extra engaged when entrusted with point-guard duties after Fred VanVleet was sidelined with again points. Barnes opened the sport with a crossover right into a stepback three, adopted by two extra heatcheck triples, and rode out the momentum for a monstrous two-way efficiency during which he flirted with a triple-double whereas additionally locking down Young. His perimeter capturing isn’t as constant because the outcomes on this sport, but it surely’s an thrilling look into his future. When he masters that shot, the remainder of the sport can be a lot simpler. The Hawks resorted to trapping him above the arc as a counter, and Barnes calmly absorbed the strain for a pair of hook passes to Christian Koloko rolling unmarked for dunks.
Five: Barnes makes strikes that depart you wanting. Barnes had it on the wing with 5 seconds left on the shot clock in opposition to a extremely touted defender in De’Andre Hunter, who began out in excellent place for the cease. Barnes backed it out, hit him with a triple crossover to open the hole, drove into the guts of the defence, and had the energy to seal Hunter on his left facet whereas utilizing his proper hand to financial institution within the shot earlier than the shot blocker may come over. The mixture of talent, energy, imaginative and prescient and contact on this one play is what makes Barnes distinctive. The solely query is why doesn’t he assault like this extra actually because he’s a strolling mismatch.
Six: Siakam heard MVP chants in his 14th, fifteenth and sixteenth journeys to the road. It was simply reward for yet one more 30-point effort from Siakam, who additionally posted 12 rebounds and 6 assists. Siakam has clearly hit one other stage in his scoring, the place he is ready to manipulate the defence to get to his shot every time he desires. He picks the appropriate spots in when to go shortly, as Siakam did on a pair of sneaky baseline drives, and likewise when to decelerate and arrange the spacing of his teammates in order that he can get into the paint, draw a double and select the open shooter. Even the photographs that he’s lacking are principally attractiveness — with little or no to do with the defender. His career-high common of 8.6 free throws per sport is a sign of simply how typically he’s beating the defence.
Seven: O.G. Anunoby was a menace on defence, securing two blocks and 6 steals, together with 5 takeaways within the first half alone. Anunoby’s size and positioning at all times retains him concerned within the play, however he turns into really menacing when he can even use his energy. Hunter discovered that the laborious manner within the second quarter as he misplaced the ball thrice within the span of 5 seconds making an attempt to work an ill-advised pick-and-roll in Anunoby’s neighborhood, which ended up with Hunter being placed on his behind as Anunoby picked his pocket and took it the opposite manner for a layup.

Eight: Koloko acquired the spot begin at centre and gave the Raptors a unique dimension. The Raptors had been in a position to be extra aggressive on the perimeter as a result of Koloko was stationed across the basket, able to erase errors. A pair instances Koloko was crushed by the bounce move to the curler, however he gained the matchup most of the time along with his three blocks in 21 minutes. The better of the three was in opposition to Murray, who had Koloko strung out to the emblem, however couldn’t beat the seven-footer in a footrace and had his layup swatted.
Nine: Gary Trent Jr. acquired something he wished within the matchup in opposition to Young. Even although he was the one guard within the rotation, the Raptors stored Trent Jr. in his standard function of being an off-ball scorer, and made a degree to search out him every time he had Young in isolation. Trent Jr. isn’t significantly athletic, neither is he flashy along with his deal with, however he is aware of precisely find out how to discover his footing for a gradual midrange look, and has a stunning set of floating finishes within the publish to attain over shot blockers.
Ten: Toronto’s win in VanVleet’s absence will grow to be a subject of debate simply because it did final season. There are some tangible variations with VanVleet off the ground, most notably within the sheer measurement that the Raptors can line up with, which limits how a lot they should ship assist. Barnes additionally appears to reply higher when given the precise duty of playmaking. But it’s additionally unquestionable how impactful VanVleet is when he does play, as his three-point capturing, safe playmaking, and disruptiveness on defence are uncommon expertise that the majority of his teammates lack. The ultimate situation is for the Raptors to grow to be adept at enjoying each types, which ought to then restrict the necessity to overwork VanVleet.
