Away from the glamour of the Premier League and unpredictable pleasure within the EFL, English non-league soccer is unrivalled.

Be it the Jamie Vardy, rags-to-riches, journey that also proves to be a supply of inspiration, or the FA Cup giant-killings that come 12 months after 12 months, there’s a lot life within the National League and beneath, and so many vivid tales ready to be informed.

With that in thoughts, meet Haji Mnoga and Ben Starkie.

Mnoga is on mortgage at Aldershot Town of the National League from Portsmouth, whereas Starkie performs for Derbyshire-based Ilkeston Town of the Northern Premier League Premier Division, on a twin registration with National League North facet Alfreton Town.

The pair are each 21 – and since March 2022, each have been fully-fledged Tanzania internationals. Now, they’re simply probably weeks away from taking part in at AFCON 2023.

“It’s one of the best memories I’ve got,” says Starkie as Mnoga nudges him, smiles and asks him to inform the story of how they met.

“For a complete 12 months, we had been speaking and taking part in Xbox most days after which, one weekend, I had an away sport down in Cambridge and Haji was staying near my sport, so mentioned he was going to drag up and watch me.

“That day, I scored two and with my last one, I went round the ‘keeper and scored and Haji was next to the goal. I just ran up to him and celebrated with him and since that moment we’ve been tight. We speak on the daily and now I get to travel with Tanzania with him. It’s the dream.”

Their journeys at membership soccer have been related, however their worldwide paths differed considerably.

Starkie – who qualifies for Tanzania by means of his mum, Happy – acquired his first call-up for the U17s just a few months after lacking out on a scholarship at hometown membership Leicester, with whom he had been for six years.

Mnoga – whose dad Suleiman performed for Zanzibar, the archipelago off the coast of Tanzania – nevertheless, earned one England U17 cap taking part in alongside Liverpool duo Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho in a pleasant in opposition to Hungary in February 2019.

“I went on holiday to Tanzania and Zanzibar every couple of years,” says Mnoga. “I’ve been there, lived it and I was prouder to represent Tanzania more than I was England.”

On March 24 2022, then-Tanzania boss Kim Poulsen handed the pair their senior debuts in a 3-1 win over the Central African Republic.

More than 18 months on, Starkie says it has given him a brand new outlook on soccer.

“The love for football in Tanzania is a different type of love. They just live and breathe football. I’m not saying we don’t in England, but the whole culture around football is completely different.

“The love you obtain is loopy and the environment in our stadium [Benjamin Mkapa Stadium] is nuts. It’s not a small stadium [60,000 capacity] and most of it was full once we performed Morocco. I’ve by no means skilled a packed-out stadium in England.

Tanzania’s outcomes below Amrouche

  • Uganda 0-1 Tanzania – March 24
  • Tanzania 0-1 Uganda – March 28
  • Tanzania 1-0 Niger – June 18
  • Algeria 0-0 Tanzania – September 7
  • Sudan 1-1 Tanzania – October 15
  • Niger 0-1 Tanzania – November 18
  • Tanzania 0-2 Morocco – November 21

“Even after the games, there are often little bajajes [Tanzanian version of a tuk-tuk] following the coach and pulling wheelies!”

Poulsen left in March and the person in cost now’s Adel Amrouche.

The Algerian, 55, is significantly skilled on the worldwide stage, having taken cost of Equatorial Guinea, Burundi, Kenya, Libya, Botswana and Yemen earlier than taking the Tanzania job in March.

He conducts his staff talks in English, that are then translated. “Our Swahili is getting better, which is helping the team gel even more,” says Mnoga.

Under Amrouche, the pair are thriving.

“I really like him, because has more of what we’re used to with the European football side of things, but he’s also just a really nice, genuine guy,” Mnoga continues.

“He is always trying to help people and his goal is for the team to do well so that the players can go on to do well. He takes a lot of pride in doing well, but he also takes a lot of pride in producing players, almost like you would in an academy.

“If you have a look at our current sport in opposition to Morocco, our goal was to win. He had the entire altering room believing we might. To be truthful to us, we did play nicely, although we misplaced 2-0. We went into the Algeria sport in September pondering we might win after which we drew, which secured qualification for AFCON.

“Everything feels so much different now compared to when we used to go, even down to the standards of the food and hotels. The whole experience it feels a lot more professional.”

Starkie agrees. “He’s a good coach to be around because he’s passionate and, as a player, that’s what you want. He’s got his standards and he doesn’t want anyone to drop below them. He will push you on and on.

“The staff has come collectively below him very well and everybody has knuckled down, targeted and everyone knows what the purpose in hand is.”

Soon, the pair will discover whether they will be part of the squad heading to AFCON.

Qualified nations must submit their final squads for the tournament – which will be held in the Ivory Coast between January 13 and February 11 – by Wednesday January 3.

Mnoga and Starkie have been included in the provisional squad for the tournament, and recent squad inclusions suggest they are both under serious consideration.

The pair smile in unison as they are asked how much they are looking forward to the prospect.

“All the alternatives I can get now will simply assist me get to the extent I wish to be at faster, which is why AFCON was on the high of my record after I had a dialog with my dad and mom about my plan,” says Mnoga.

“That was my dream and it hasn’t truly taken that lengthy, so I can begin greater issues. But I do not wish to get forward of myself. It’s occurring now so I need get pleasure from it. Hopefully we get the possibility to go to the largest event in Africa.”

Starkie knows this could represent a chance to further his career at a higher level, too.

“It’s the largest platform for each of us to probably play on to spice up our possibilities of making it to the extent we hope to sooner or later play at. You’re in opposition to the highest skills in the entire of Africa and there is not likely a greater alternative that would come at this cut-off date for both of us.”

The Taifa Stars – as Tanzania are known – have only competed at AFCON twice in history and have picked up a solitary point from their six games – ironically from a 1-1 draw with the Ivory Coast in March 1980.

Not to say it has been lacking in the past, but there it seems there is a real hunger and ambition to not only get that first ever win on the board, but to put Tanzania on the footballing map.

“It’s going to mean a lot for the people back home,” says Starkie. “Our aim is to give them the best performances we can and to get as far in the tournament as we can.

“It’s about exhibiting what Tanzania has to supply by way of expertise. It might be an eye-opener for the folks again house as we’re a special group from earlier than and we will compete with the larger nations in Africa. We’re not essentially seen because the underdogs or the little nation anymore.”

One factor is for sure: This decided younger pair is not going to be taking something with no consideration in the event that they earn an opportunity to play within the Ivory Coast subsequent month.
