Lamar Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens hanging on in Super Bowl cost as Philadelphia Eagles show why they’re champions, says Neil Reynolds

It was one other week within the NFL crammed with headlines, historical past, notable wins, wonderful performs and boneheaded errors. Every week we watch what unfolds and say ‘I have not seen that earlier than’, it is what makes this season so thrilling to observe.

Here are my large takeaways from Week Four…

History in Dublin

I’ll begin in Dublin, Ireland, the place the anticipation for the sport between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings was a fever pitch days earlier than a ball was kicked into the air at Croke Park. When Aaron Rodgers related with DK Metcalf for that 80-yard landing strike, if there had been a roof on that stadium it might have blown off. Rodgers was actually environment friendly, made a very good begin and was supported by Kenneth Gainwell. The protection additionally had six sacks and two interceptions. I used to be excited to see Carson Wentz for the Vikings however at occasions I feel he was overwhelmed by that protection, though he made it shut on the finish. The environment was electrical and I’m certain the NFL will return to Dublin very quickly.

Can Chiefs ignite their season?

I used to be shocked how simply the Kansas City Chiefs dealt with the Baltimore Ravens in a 37-20 win on Sunday. Xavier Worthy was again at receiver for the Chiefs and opened up their offense a bit extra, Patrick Mahomes threw for 270 yards and 4 touchdowns, however that Ravens protection was so porous. They have so many starters lacking, too many to beat and they should grasp on proper now and make a second-half run. They did not make sufficient changes on offense both, so it was a very robust day on the workplace. The large query now’s whether or not the Ravens can repair themselves and if the Chiefs can maintain what they confirmed Sunday evening.

The champions discover a manner

I do not know what it’s about these Philadelphia Eagles however the Super Bowl champions simply know how you can win video games. Jalen Hurts did not full a single cross within the second half, Saquon Barkley was held to 43 speeding yards at about two yards per carry, AJ Brown had simply two catches and took to social media after the sport to complain about his lack of use, they have been taking up an undefeated staff within the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in fierce Florida climate and so they held on to win 31-25. They have now gained 20 of their final 21 video games, they’ve the successful behavior.

Mitchell’s nightmare day

It was a pleasure to be again within the studio on Sunday evening with Scott Pioli, the person who constructed the New England Patriots dynasty alongside Bill Belichick. Three-time Super Bowl winner, five-time NFL General Manager of the Year. He mentioned at one level that extra video games are misplaced within the NFL than gained, and I feel that was the case for the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday as they fell to a 27-20 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams. Spare a thought – it would not must be a constructive one – for large receiver Adonai Mitchell, who would have had a 75-yard landing catch-and-run within the third quarter, however for an early celebration that made him fumble by way of the top zone. And then when Jonathan Taylor places the Colts up by seven with a 53-yard landing run, Adonai Mitchell will get known as for a holding penalty. If I’m him, I’m driving again to Indianapolis. I couldn’t have gotten on that airplane with my teammates.

Jags proceed playoff march

Could the Jacksonville Jaguars be for actual? They now have a 3-1 document after heading out west and beating the San Francisco 49ers 26-21. We made a lot about Liam Coen being an offensive thoughts and his relationship with Trevor Lawrence, and that’s nonetheless essential, however the protection has powered this begin. They pressured 4 turnovers on Sunday and have now had no less than three turnovers in every of their first 4 video games this season, which is a basis. As is the working recreation, which Liam Coen was famous for in Tampa. He’s circled Jacksonville’s floor assault and that is setting the stage for us to rightly count on extra from Trevor Lawrence within the second half of the season. After the primary month, Jacksonville are in a playoff spot.

Player of the Week – Matthew Stafford/Puka Nacua, Los Angeles Rams

I’m going to separate this between two Los Angeles Rams gamers. I discussed the Colts letting the Rams grasp round late in that recreation, however the Rams have been additionally potent on offense. Matthew Stafford threw for 375 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, Puka Nacua has 13 catches for 170 yards and a landing and Nacua now has 42 catches for 503 yards in 4 video games. Those two are rolling and the Rams are a real contender.

Coach of the Week – Dan Campbell, Detroit Lions

The Lions anticipated to win in opposition to the Cleveland Browns, however they needed to care for enterprise and so they did simply that, 34-10. But that is for the larger image of the Lions and the place they go subsequent, as a result of the sky was falling in on this staff apparently after a Week One loss at Lambeau Field. All they’ve performed is bounce again with three straight wins whereas scoring 124 factors within the course of and so they now high the NFC North.

Play of the Week – Josh Blackwell

I’m going with Josh Blackwell’s late subject aim block to offer the Chicago Bears an exhilarating 25-24 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. That is now six fourth quarter subject aim blocks within the NFL this season, and I do surprise, provided that kickers are nailing subject targets from 60/61/62/63 yards, are we going to see the holder return a step or two? That opens up the perimeters so perhaps it isn’t attainable, however I undoubtedly suppose kicking models must do one thing to certain issues up as a result of these blocks are coming at an unprecedented fee.

On the radar… London is asking!

It’s lastly London week. I can’t anticipate the subsequent three video games to be performed within the capital, beginning at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium because the Browns tackle the Vikings for the fortieth London recreation. I used to be on the first in 2007 and I’ll be there on Sunday. It’s going to be an actual privilege to be there, the league continues to go from energy to energy globally and so they aren’t slowing down. We have six worldwide video games in Europe this 12 months, seven throughout the globe while you add in Brazil, and so they’ve simply signed a brand new deal to play in Rio de Janeiro subsequent 12 months and past. I feel we’ll very quickly get to 16 worldwide video games per season. These are historic occasions and the NFL is not going to decelerate its world attain. We are right here for the experience and we should always take pleasure in it. Brazil had their flip, Dublin was implausible, now it is London’s flip.
