Los Angeles Lakers: Fan perspective on the massive speaking factors

Lakers superfan Jonathan Kiernan assesses the 2021-22 season for his crew, after which casts an eye fixed forward to the 2022-23 marketing campaign for Los Angeles.

Where my love for the NBA and the Lakers got here from…

My title is Jonathan Kiernan. I’m from Dublin, Ireland, and, for over 20 years, I’ve been proud to name the Los Angeles Lakers my crew.

I first got here to assist the purple and gold again in 2000. My great-uncle who initially hailed from Ireland had made the good state of California his dwelling. He got here again to Ireland to go to household. We all met up with him and he got here bearing items! He gifted me a Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Lakers T-shirt.

Being 10, I knew nothing about American sports activities outdoors of the WWF (now WWE). He pulled the Lakers T-shirt nearer and instructed me that the best present on earth was taking place in Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Shaq and Kobe present! From that second I used to be hooked.

My biggest Lakers reminiscence must be Game 7 of the 2009-10 NBA Finals. The two most storied franchises in NBA historical past, the Los Angeles Lakers vs the Boston Celtics. All tied up at 3-3. It was time for a brand new NBA champion to be topped. Kobe and Gasol vs Garnett, Pierce and Allen (let’s not neglect Rondo!).

Ron Artest drains a three-point shot with 1:02 seconds remaining within the fourth quarter and throws his arms up within the air and, at that second, the Lakers nation knew the Larry O’Brien trophy was coming again to LA!

Grade for final season: F

While it’s fantastic strolling down reminiscence lane, final season for the purple and gold introduced followers of the Lakers proper again all the way down to earth.

On paper, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook sound like one of many biggest trios in NBA historical past. Two former MVPs (James and Westbrook) and a perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate and a top-five vote-getter for MVP in 2020 in Davis. You add in some seasoned veterans like Dwight Howard and Carmelo Anthony and discover some good younger expertise in gamers like Malik Monk and Kendrick Nunn and you’ll assume the Lakers are NBA Finals certain proper?

Oh, how unsuitable we had been.

The season for the Los Angeles Lakers by no means actually received going. Injuries, creaking older our bodies and a head coach who, after main the Lakers to a championship in 2020, appeared to have run out of concepts.

In quick, the season was a whole and utter catastrophe.

The Lakers’ offense stumbled out of the blocks and continued to disintegrate with every passing recreation. No rhythm may very well be received on account of quite a few accidents to nearly all of the squad. James was nearly all of the Lakers’ offense. At 37 years of age, he shouldered lots this previous season and he virtually took dwelling the scoring title however, sadly, not the NBA title.

But the place the Lakers actually fell aside was on protection. Coach Frank Vogel introduced defensive depth and tenacity to the crew upon his appointment as head coach. The Lakers below his stewardship had among the finest defenses within the league. However, on account of older gamers, lack of depth and at instances lack of caring, the Lakers’ protection fell off a bridge this previous yr.

Assessing the offseason for the Lakers

This offseason for the Los Angeles Lakers has seen a monumental shift in each the teaching and enjoying roster.

Vogel has been relieved of his duties. Thank you Frank for guiding this crew to a championship, Lakers nation might be perpetually grateful. Once a Laker, all the time a Laker.

In his place, head coach Darvin Ham was introduced in. A well-respected, hard-working and true gamers’ coach.

Coach Ham has a no-nonsense, no-excuse teaching philosophy which might be an ideal match with what the Lakers hope to perform this season.

On the gamers’ aspect of issues, the Lakers have massively overhauled the roster. Gone are the older, seasoned veterans who’ve been by wars through the years. They had been unable to assist the Lakers win a championship however respect goes to all those that signify the purple and gold with satisfaction.

The older heads have now been changed with the younger weapons! Players who’re mouldable into what Ham is seeking to do with the Lakers this yr, which is convey vitality, play protection and hustle on each ends of the ground.

Young gamers comparable to Lonnie Walker IV, Juan Toscano Anderson, Troy Brown, Damian Jones and a former member of the Lakers’ ‘famed’ younger core and a fan favorite in Thomas Bryant had been introduced into the fold.

The vitality they may convey to the ground every evening might be infectious and can hopefully assist the skilled gamers when it comes to taking the load off their shoulders to dominate on each ends of the ground every evening. That will nonetheless be required however hopefully not as a lot as we nonetheless have LeBron, who, whereas nonetheless enjoying at an all-world stage, wants to avoid wasting his physique for the playoffs.

While the free company acquisitions have been promising, the principle focus of the offseason thus far has been the Lakers’ willingness to maneuver off of Westbrook and the Lakers’ craving to reunite James and ‘Uncle Drew’ himself, Kyrie Irving.

During their instances with Cleveland, they introduced a championship to a franchise and the state of Ohio that tasted nothing however defeat and sorrow for over 50 years.

After a failed experiment in Brooklyn, it appeared as if Kyrie was seeking to rejoin his former MVP team-mate in Los Angeles.

The saga has ensued all offseason with no signal of it coming to an finish. Will the Lakers have to attend till the subsequent offseason to have an opportunity of securing Kyrie? Will the point-guard maestro drive his technique to LA this summer time? Only time will inform.

Three predictions for the season forward…

• Anthony Davis will return to being an all-NBA participant and a top-10 participant within the league, we’ll lastly see Davis turn out to be the centrepiece of the Lakers’ offense which can enable for LeBron to not overexert himself within the common season
• The Los Angeles Lakers might be a playoff crew and can push laborious so as to add one other championship
• This season might be pivotal for the purple and gold and particularly for Lakers basic supervisor Rob Pelinka. Win large and he retains his job – lose and the Lakers will in all probability be on the lookout for a brand new GM.

Big stakes forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, which hopefully will result in an thrilling season!
