Oilers Takeaways: McDavid magnificent as soon as once more, grabs 5 factors in win over Kraken

Read Time:12 Minute, 41 Second

The injured Leon Draisaitl didn’t costume for Friday’s sport in Seattle. When it was all stated and performed, he would play solely 4 much less minutes than Seattle starter Philipp Grubauer.

As it turned out, the Oilers have been simply high quality with out the NHL’s second main scorer, leapfrogging each the Kraken and the Calgary Flames within the standings on a shocking five-point evening by Connor McDavid, as Edmonton administered a 7-2 Pacific Northwest pounding of the Kraken.

“We were able to assert the game we wanted to play right off the bat,” stated head coach Jay Woodcroft. “Put the other team on the back foot. We took the game to them.”

This, people, was as stress free a hockey sport as an Oilers fan has loved in a looong time. Not a finger nail chewed or church candle lit.

Without Draisaitl, Edmonton pinned seven on the Kraken. It was by no means shut.

“When you take (Draisaitl’s) 20, 21 minutes out of the lineup, it’s an opportunity for others,” stated Woodcroft.

“When you’re missing someone like Leon, it’s not that you’re replacing him. It’s just that other people are able to step up to the forefront and pick up the slack.”

“Other people?” Like, say, McDavid?

Playing a season-low 16:01, McDavid had a season-high 5 factors.

“Especially losing Leon, he was going to want to step up,” stated Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who had a four-point evening himself. “Tonight he was he was a driver. I mean, he’s definitely our leader emotionally on the ice. I thought we followed his lead and rallied behind him.”

Three nights after a nervy 2-1 street win towards the hated Calgary Flames, the Oilers received a laugher in Seattle, main 3-0 earlier than the sport was 4 minutes outdated. Edmonton jumped on the Kraken with objectives at 2:44, 3:16 and three:55 of the primary interval, then scored once more six minutes in a while a Jesse Puljujarvi snipe, no much less.

Klim Kostin had two objectives and a scrap. He is rising as a pleasant depth ahead, on a staff that’s determined for precisely that.

“He’s so skilled, so talented,” stated McDavid, “and he’s big and mean. It’s a heck of a combination.”

McDavid was merely magnificent, with 4 assists and Edmonton’s seventh aim of the evening. This was the elegant McDavid, on an evening the place he merely operated a step forward of the Kraken, distributing pucks to Zach Hyman (two objectives), Darnell Nurse and Puljujarvi — all main assists.

The opening stanza was McDavid’s 18^th profession three-point interval, and by sport’s finish he would have totals of 32-40-72 — in 37 video games this season. He is on tempo for a ridiculous 160 factors, and even when he settles for 150, that could be a mark that solely 4 gamers have achieved prior to now 50 years: Wayne Gretzky (9 instances), Mario Lemieux (4 instances), Steve Yzerman and Bernie Nicholls.

“I’m running out of adjectives and analogies or metaphors,” Woodcroft stated, when requested to explain his captain. “What he is doing, I think we should all realize, is quite special. It’s the best league in the world, and he’s off to a career year. He’s doing something that the league hasn’t seen for a very long time.”

So is the Oilers powerplay, which went two-for-two on a pair of Hyman objectives from the door step, passes courtesy of McDavid. That uptick takes the Oilers unit to an excellent 33.3% on the season, which might be the very best ever recorded.

This was the start of three conferences between Edmonton and Seattle in 19 days. The Kraken go to Rogers Place on Tuesday.
